Next, we will reveal some of the best hiking routes. Hiking in Gran Canaria is a unique experience!
On the South of Gran Canaria there lies Maspalomas, a town well known for holding the best beaches in Gran Canaria and palm groves. That is why this is our first recommendation of hiking routes on the island, a paradise of spectacular sand dunes, where you can walk very safely and comfortably.
In Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, you will travel to the desert without leaving Spain! On this route, you will be able to fully enjoy the sun and sand while tanning your skin.
You can start the route from La Charca to end in Bahía de Ingles. Cross the dunes or walk along the seashore. Either is a good option to enjoy this unique natural space!
We assure you that it is a place that will not leave you indifferent.
If you want to do this route calmly, in Villa Gran Canaria we have villas near Maspalomas/Meloneras so that you can enjoy this area to the fullest and you can do your routes with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you will arrive at a placid place to rest.
Roque Nublo, Tejeda
In addition to being one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, Tejeda has become a paradise on Earth for lovers of the countryside and nature. For this reason, we recommend you to include this beautiful spot in your hiking routes in Gran Canaria.
This natural symbol of the island is a rocky elevation at an altitude of more than 1800 meters and it is one of the most visited tourist sites on the island.
The route starts at the Cruz de Tejeda, the starting point for most of the hiking routes in this part of Gran Canaria.
You can also do so from La Culata, from where an attractive route starts uphill to Roque Nublo.
Those who prefer to walk less, can leave their cars in the car park at the Degollada de La Goleta and make a simpler and shorter walk. They are about 1.4 kilometers that can be covered in 20 minutes. It is an easy-moderate uphill route which you can do with children. The surroundings of the route will impress you.
Another option is to make a circular ascent route from the Llanos de la Pez (approximately 1-hour journey). However, this route is a bit hard for very young children.
We also recommend the Ruta de la Plata (Silver Route). A beautiful trail which is made by following an old cattle route. The old settlers of the area took their animals in search of pasture every year through this route. It has been improved and conditioned for hikers and pilgrims overtime.
This route starts at the viewpoint of La Goleta, passes through Roque Nublo and ends at Cruz de Tejeda.
The total route is about 13 kilometers (approximately five hours) and has a medium degree of difficulty. Once you are at the top, you will realize why we recommend this place in this small guide to hiking routes. It is a real wonder of nature!
Pico de las Nieves
A place to include in your hiking routes in Gran Canaria is Pico de las Nieves, the highest point on the island. The viewpoint located on the cover will offer you excellent views of the area. Even on a clear day, you can see the Roque Nublo, some of the surrounding peaks and even the Teide in the background of the neighbouring island of Tenerife!
You can follow the path from Llanos de la Pez, a pleasant and safe path that will take you to Pico de las Nieves.
There is the possibility of doing part of the journey by car. The last stretch of the road can be climbed easily, even with children. Prepare yourself for the cold and the wind in winter, and for the highest temperatures and moist in summer, anyhow you will enjoy the place to the fullest.
Ruta de las Presas
If you are more adventurous and prefer to do go hiking in Gran Canaria with higher intensity, we recommend La Ruta de las Presas. With a length of approximately 12.2 kilometers, it is a route reserved for the most experienced hikers who are keen on long-distance trekking, even though its difficulty level is medium.
It is an ideal hiking route to glimpse some of the most spectacular natural areas of the island and get to know the local culture.
The hiking route, with an estimated completion time of 4 hours, begins in Degollada de Cruz Grande extends to La Presa de Soria, the largest dam on the island. It is such a big dam that it has never been filled. When the water tide drops, you can see the remains of the old village. A real spectacle!
On this route, you can see some of the most spectacular volcanic formations on the island, visit the Rural Park of the Cloud, the Natural Park of Pilancones and also get to know the traditional cave houses (inheritance of the aboriginal past) that still remain on the island located in the small town of Las Casas.
A mixture of nature and culture that only Gran Canaria is able to offer.
